• Are you reflecting product cost increases into your sales pricing? If so – How quickly is this done? How long does it take to take effect?
• If sales prices are based on discounts from a trade or list price – what is the relationship between your cost price and the list price?
• Are costs increasing at a greater rate or earlier than the trade or list price? How much margin is being eroded?
• Are you able to manage the supplier cost increases to understand the true impact on margin?
• If discounts are applied to groups of products, then what is the profit differential within the group? Applying an average discount could result in some prices being too low and others too high.
• Are you concentrating on being competitive on high profile products but allowing margin to erode unnecessarily in other areas?
• Do the sales staff understand what profit is available on different product lines?
• Are sales staff overriding system pricing at the point of sale? Do they understand what they are giving away? and whether it was necessary?
• Who pays the customer invoice? Who makes the customer’s sourcing decision? Therefore who are you targeting the pricing activity at?
• Do your customers fit into different customer segments? different segments will have different discount aspirations. Do you set different pricing models accordingly?
